It is with great sadness that the SAA advises of the passing of Greg Pennicuik in hospital in Victoria on the 19th of October.

In 1964, he changed rate to Underwater Control. He served on the WW2 vintage River Class Frigate HMAS Gascoyne from November 1963 until March 1964, and after more training he posted to the ASW Frigate HMAS Quiberon for three months. Over the next three years he served on HMAS Derwent, HMAS Parramatta, HMAS ANZAC and HMAS Sydney. Whilst on Sydney he would make a Vietnam trip taking the RAAF’s 9 Squadron to the theatre of Operations. He qualified for the General Service Medal (Malay & Borneo), The Vietnam Logistic Service Medal, the Defence Force Long Service Medal, and the Australian Defence Medal.

In 1966 Greg volunteered for submarines and he posted to the United Kingdom in January 1967 where he undertook his submarine training at HMS Dolphin in Hampshire. On completion of his shore training, he joined the Royal Navy’s Oberon Class submarine HMS Opportune, where he qualified as a submariner and he was awarded his Dolphins. He returned to Australia in mid-1968, posting to his first Australian Submarine; HMAS Otway in mid-1969.

Over the next decade Greg would serve on HMAS Oxley (Three times), HMAS Otway, HMAS Onslow, HMAS Ovens (Twice) and on HMS Odin whilst it was on loan to the RAN. Greg was a long serving member of the Submarines Association of Australia having joined in 1988. He had previously been a member of the Submarines Old Comrades Association – Australia.

The SAA passes its condolences to Greg’s family and friends. Funeral/memorial services will be advised when known.

May He Rest In Peace
